Being invited to an interview is a clear sign that your competence is relevant. Still, many IT consultants do not land assignments despite strong experience and the right technical profile. In many cases, it is not about what you know, but how clearly you manage to demonstrate it in the interview. For the client, the interview is not just a conversation. It is the moment when they need to feel confident that you can step into their environment, understand their needs, and contribute from day one.

Why the Interview Matters

As an IT consultant, the interview is one of the most important steps in the assignment process. In a relatively short amount of time, the client needs to assess whether you have the right skills, whether you understand the context of the assignment, and whether you will work well with the team.

Therefore, it is not enough to simply describe what you have worked on. You also need to be able to demonstrate how you think, how you approach problems, and what impact your work has had. For this reason, clarity and structure are essential. It is in the interview that the perception of you is formed.

Common mistakes

A common mistake in interviews is that answers become too general. Many candidates describe their experience in a way that sounds good, but lacks specificity. When you say that you have “worked a lot with Java” or “been part of several agile projects,” the client rarely gets a clear picture of what you have actually done, what responsibilities you had, or what value you delivered.

As a result, the client finds it difficult to place you within their organization. And in interviews, people often choose what feels clear and safe – not necessarily what looks best on paper.

Why concrete examples matter

When talking about previous assignments, the client needs to understand the context, your role, and the impact of your work. Therefore, it is important to structure your answers in a way that makes your contribution clear and easy to follow. One effective way to do this is to use the STAR model, where you briefly describe the situation, what needed to be done, what you personally did, and what the result was.

These are the questions clients typically want answered:

  • What was the problem or need?
  • What was your role?
  • What did you do concretely?
  • What was the result or impact?

When these elements are included, your experience becomes easy to understand, even for someone who does not share your context.

Prepare Based on the Client’s Needs

Another important aspect is tailoring your examples to the assignment. To do this, carefully review the requirements profile and consider which parts of your experience are most relevant. If the client is looking for someone with experience in cloud platforms, integrations, or change management, for example, you should be prepared with examples that demonstrate exactly that.

In other words, it is not about reciting your entire CV. Instead, it is about selecting the right experiences and making them understandable for the client.

  • Key questions to prepare for:
  • Which previous assignments are similar to this one?
  • Which technologies, ways of working, or industries are most relevant?
  • What concrete results can I highlight?
  • How can I show that I can quickly get up to speed in the client’s environment?

Ultimately, the more clearly you connect your experience to the client’s needs, the easier it becomes for them to see you in the assignment.

Demonstrate both competence and collaboration

Technical expertise is often a basic requirement, but it is rarely the only factor the client evaluates. In addition to technical skills, they also want to understand how you function in a team, how you communicate, and how you handle challenges. As a consultant, you often join existing organizations, teams, and ways of working. Because of this, it is valuable to demonstrate that you are attentive, self-driven, and experienced in creating value in new environments.

For example, feel free to share situations where you have worked closely with developers, product owners, architects, testers, or other stakeholders. This helps show that you not only understand the technology, but also the broader context of the delivery.

Visionite’s perspective

You have the competence. The key is presenting it in a way that makes it easy for the client to understand your value. At Visionite, we help IT consultants make their experience visible – so that the right competence also leads to the right assignments. As a leading IT consulting company, we support our consultants throughout the entire process: from matching and interviews to assignments, development, and long-term careers.

In the end, a successful interview is not about selling yourself as strongly as possible. Rather, it is about creating trust, demonstrating relevance, and making it clear why you are the right person for the assignment.
