From early days exploring Microsoft Paint to building a home server rack and automating smart lights — our colleague Kristian in Helsinki is proof that curiosity can spark a lifelong passion for tech. With a strong foundation in Java, Linux, and DevOps, he’s not just a problem solver, but a vital part of Visionite’s growing tech community in Finland. Now, we get the chance to hear his story — about his journey into IT, what drives him, and his thoughts on where technology is headed next.
How did you get into the IT industry? Was it a childhood dream or something you discovered later?
– I was fascinated by computers from an early age. In the 90s, we had an IBM work computer at home, and I spent hours exploring it. My first real interaction with technology was through Microsoft Paint, but as I got my own computer, I quickly realized that it wasn’t always easy to use. That curiosity led me to look under the hood, discovering files, experimenting, and learning how things worked. I was also a big gamer, and back then, gaming required a lot of configuration. If you wanted to play, you had to learn how to tweak settings, install patches, and optimize performance. That hands-on learning process eventually sparked my interest in IT.
“It’s a great feeling when colleagues come to me with questions, and I can help them navigate complex systems. In IT, there’s always more to learn, and I love that infinite challenge.”
– Kristian Nordman, senior software developer Visionite, Helsinki
What technical areas are you most knowledgeable in?
– I have extensive experience with Java and the surrounding ecosystem. I also enjoy working with DevOps, Linux, and server infrastructure—I even have my own server rack at home for hobby projects. Recently, I’ve been experimenting with home automation. For example, I’ve been trying to control IKEA smart lights via my phone. I also grow chili peppers, so I’ve been monitoring temperature and humidity levels through automation. Programming has always been a passion. Before university, I built a simple calculator program just for fun. My first job was in test automation, which later led me to work on the tools for test automation, and eventually, I moved into system development. Throughout my career, Linux and Java have remained at the core of what I do.
“If you find something you’re passionate about — go for it! The best way to learn is by trying different things and working with different people.”
What does a typical working day look like for you?
– My day usually involves a mix of independent work and collaboration. Some tasks require deep focus, while others involve discussing solutions with colleagues. I appreciate this balance because it keeps me engaged and energized. Problem-solving is a big part of my daily routine, whether it’s debugging, optimizing systems, or learning new technologies.
“Work-life balance means setting boundaries so that work doesn’t take over everything. Flexibility is a key part of maintaining that balance.”
– Kristian Nordman, senior software developer Visionite, Helsinki
What is it like to work as an IT specialist at Visionite?
– Working at Visionite is a truly rewarding experience. The team is full of talented, friendly people, and there’s a fantastic balance between independent work and teamwork. I really appreciate the flexibility to work in a way that suits me, while still having plenty of opportunities to collaborate and learn from others. The best part is the people and the spirit of the company — there’s a great atmosphere, and I always look forward to connecting with my colleagues. The strong culture of knowledge-sharing, both within the team and with our clients, makes every day exciting and inspiring.
Is there a project you are particularly proud of?
– I take pride in the moments when I truly understand how everything connects. It’s a great feeling when colleagues come to me with questions, and I can help them navigate complex systems. In IT, there’s always more to learn, and I love that infinite challenge. In previous projects, I’ve reached that deep understanding, but in my current role, I’m still getting there. I’ve only been with the company for a year, working with a major financial client. The complexity of the system makes it challenging to grasp everything at once, but I’m steadily progressing.
What tech trends are you looking forward to?
– AI is incredibly exciting. Right now, there’s a lot of buzz around it, but we haven’t yet seen its full potential unfold in practice. I’m curious to see how AI will evolve and become more integrated into everyday applications. Currently, I don’t use AI in my daily work, but I find it fascinating to develop things that others can benefit from. The future of AI-driven automation and intelligent systems is something I look forward to exploring.
What is your best career advice for someone who wants to enter the IT industry?
– If you find something you’re passionate about—go for it! IT offers so many opportunities, and the best way to learn is by trying different things and working with different people. Experiment, explore, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.
What does work-life balance mean to you?
– For me, work-life balance means setting boundaries so that work doesn’t take over everything. IT is exciting, and it’s easy to get completely absorbed in it, but it’s important to keep hobbies and personal time separate. Flexibility is a key part of maintaining balance. I appreciate being able to work in a way that aligns with my productivity cycles—when I’m in a good flow, I can get a lot done, and that makes work both more efficient and more enjoyable.
